Real lives, Real Futures: Public Meeting in Parliament on Abolition of EMA – 11 January

2010 was the year when serious decisions were made about our futures.

2011 is the year when these decisions become realities for millions of people.

The Save EMA Campaign has called a public meeting in the House of Commons to discuss the realities confronting young people at sixth form and college, their parents and the wider community.

This month is the first in over 6 years where the government will no longer accept applications for the Education Maintenance Allowance. Once the academic year ends, no one will receive EMA.

We want to bring students, teachers, parents and politicians together to discuss what the abolition of EMA will really mean.

Come along to hear from students, College Principals and the decision makers on this vital issue.

Tuesday, January 11 · 6:00pm – 8:00pm

Committee Room 8 / 10, House of Commons

update: Worcester College of Technology UCU are supporting a meeting the Student Union have arranged with the local MP, Robin Walker, over the education cuts. They also forwarded the following note: ‘Members might also wish to remember that in May 2010, at the General Election hustings here at WCT, all candidates were asked their stance on EMA. Robin Walker stated categorically that he supported EMA and pledged himself to defend it. Someone might ask him to justify his u-turn on this issue. If he claims that it was not until the coalition government took power that they became aware of the true nature of the public finances (justifying the Lib Dem change of policy on fees) it might also be pointed out that consultations between civil servants and potentially incoming governments always take place before a General Election and that the Conservatives (and their candidates) would have been under no illusions as to the state of the budget deficit. Their election statements should have been suitably informed.’

EMA keeps students in education for longer, says new study ahead of Monday’s Save EMA day

New research has revealed that students who receive the educational maintenance allowance (EMA) have much better attendance records and are more likely to complete courses. The study by the 157 Group shows that in some colleges the EMA has boosted attendance and course completion to over 90%

Save the EMA – Get organised for 13 December 2010

The government intends to axe the Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) for college students in England. This will have a massive impact on those families in  our communities who most need support to undertake education.

The EMA is a means-tested allowance of between £10 and £30, paid to 16- to 19-year-olds who stay on in education. In 2009/10, 635,000 learners received at least one EMA payment, and around 80 per cent of those the full £30.

The EMA helped support a huge increase in the number of young people from less well off backgrounds going onto college.  Students in areas with higher levels of social hardship are most dependent on the weekly financial support, and will therefore be hit hard by this cut. In some areas of Birmingham, Leicester and the North West as many as four-fifths of students receive the EMA.

Thousands of students could now be forced to drop out of college which will in turn also put even more college jobs at risk.

This is a punitive, cruel, unfair and inadequately evidenced cut on the most vulnerable and those in the greatest need.

Take a stand now against the cruelest of cuts

NUS, UCU, Unison, NUT, Unite, GMB, ATL and NASUWT are holding a nationwide day of lunchtime protests at colleges on 13 December.

We are calling on all members to support these peaceful lunchtime protests at their local college.

Please note that this is a united day of protest and not industrial action.

What YOU can do

  • Make urgent contact now with your other campus unions and Students’ Union  or student reps to discuss local ideas for the day
  • Speak to other union branches and community groups in your area and involve them in your plans
  • Approach your college principal about your plans – ask them to support the day (many principals are concerned about the axing of the EMA)
  • Sign the joint union EMA petition
  • Contact your local MP (www.writetothem.com) to ask them to sign the petition, attend and/or publicly support the day and the campaign
  • Put up a poster advertising the day of action: EMA day of action poster
  • Distribute a leaflet about the day of action and the EMA cut: EMA day of action leaflet

Scrapping the EMA

“We won’t scrap the EMA”: Michael Gove, Guardian, Tuesday 2 March 2010

20 October 2010: George Osborne announces that EMA will be cut

As part of the Comprehensive Spending Review, the government is cutting Education Maintenance Allowances. This will have a massive impact on those families in  our communities who most need support to undertake education.

In 2009/10, 635,000 learners received at least one EMA payment, and around 80 per cent of those the full £30.

These are lower income families: the maximum payment was only paid to those with total household incomes of less than £20,817 in 2009/10.

Students in areas where people are more likely to have no qualifications are most dependent on the weekly financial support. In some areas of Birmingham, Leicester and the North West as many as four-fifths of students receive the EMA.

EMA plays a vital role in helping families to support learners through their education, reducing their dependence on part-time employment and ensuring that they can continue in their studies.

Research conducted by the Institute of Fiscal Studies revealed that the EMA increased the proportion of males staying on in full-time education by 7.4% and females by 5.9%.

This is a punitive, cruel, unfair and inadequately evidenced cut on the most vulnerable and those in the greatest need.

It is yet another nail in the coffin of the democratic goal of extending access to education as a pathway out of poverty and inequality. It will also put even more college jobs across the country at risk.

It is yet another nail in the coffin of the economic goal of building a skilled workforce to restore future prosperity.

NUS, UCU, UNISON, NUT, Unite, GMB, ATL and NASUWT are campaigning to persuade the government to reverse this cut.
